Thirty centimetres of glass tiles on a battery motor — the one lighting fixture that needs no explanation and no cables. Hang it from a beam, a pergola or a doorway hook, switch the motor on, and it turns slowly all night on AA batteries.
One thing to know before booking: a mirror ball has no light of its own. It needs something narrow pointed at it — one of the battery uplighters aimed across the room does the job beautifully, and you still have three left for the walls.
Who it’s for
Just about any room with somewhere to hang it. It is the cheapest thing in our lighting section and the easiest decision in it. House parties, bachelorette weekends, retro birthdays, wedding after-parties — the moment the ball starts turning, the karaoke floor becomes a disco.
When to skip it
- Nothing overhead to hang from — an open lawn defeats it; it wants a beam, a pergola or a ceiling.
- You want the room actually lit — this is decoration, not illumination. The uplighters and festoon handle that; treat the ball as the finishing touch.
